It sprawls in the extreme north-west corner of the state over an area of sq. On its north lie Himachal Pradesh State and the territory of Tibet and the district of Chamoli in the east. The district is named after its headquarters town Uttarkashi, an ancient place with rich cultural heritage and as the name suggests is the Kashi of north Uttara held almost as high a veneration as Kashi of the plain Varanasi. Both the Kashi of the plain Varanasi as well as the Kashi of north are situated on the banks of the river Ganga Bhagirathi.
Situated in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, the Kashi of North wins you over with its picturesque and serene environs. The Vishwanath Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is one of the oldest shrines of Uttarkashi and is thronged by devotees in large numbers. A major attraction of the temple is the large trident placed at its entrance. Along with the temples, the several ashrams and dharamshalas around the city are also worth visiting, especially for devotees.
To witness the cultural side of Uttarkashi, visit the city during the various festivals and fairs like the Magh Mela, celebrated with much gusto. Situated amid mountains, Uttarkashi is an ideal location for trekking and exploring natural sites. It is also the natural habitat of the Himalayan Golden Trout, an endangered fish. The word 'Uttrakashi' means 'kashi of the north' and the place is revered almost as much as the 'kashi of the plains'--Varanasi.
Just like Varanasi, Uttarkashi is also located on the banks of Ganga river Bhagirathi. Besides enjoying a close proximity to major religious centres of Yamunotri and Gangotri, it is home to many beautiful temples. The most famous is the temple dedicated to Lord Vishwanath an avatar of Lord Shiva , just m from the local bus stand.
The Shakti Temple, located right opposite the Vishwanath Temple, is also popular among devotees and is home to a ft-high trishul trident. Uttarkashi has been a sacred ground of Hindus since ages and it is believed that sages and seers have used this as a spiritual place to practice penances and performed sacrifices. It was also the hub of the Vedic language and people came here from across the country to learn the language better.
