Being open about her sobriety, especially writing about it with her friend, Joe, according to the liner notes , has held her accountable to that life-changing decision. After she got sober, she did what most songwriters of her prodigious talent would have done: She took the journey upon which she embarked, and she chronicled it in song.
I was plagued with anxiety and depression growing up, and becoming famous overnight really stuck the knife in and twisted it. After her Columbia Records debut, Spraggan embarked on a grueling schedule of recording, releasing music and touring. Throughout , she toured Europe, and in March of the following year, a showcase as the South By Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas, landed her a deal with Cooking Vinyl Records. But putting booze aside was just the beginning of her sobriety journey , she added.
These things could jump in and touch my soul, and whether they made me happy or made me cry, they would jump out of nowhere. I think people are really scared of saying that word because it's heavy, but I would say I'm an alcoholic in a very modern sense, in that although I don't wake up every morning and want a drink — when I drink, alcohol defines who I am," she says. But last year I knew I had choices to make about my life, and I needed to be mentally clear and sober to make them," she continues.
Now, I feel I'm living my best life and can be the best version of myself without alcohol. She describes her transformation as "like a miracle. All my life, from around the age of two, I've been a massive trouble-magnet. I've literally crashed through so many experiences and packed them into such a short time. Then I married and it was all about family stuff. I feel as though I've had so many lives, not just one, but this is the first time I've ever felt steady and in control.
Her fitness regime — running up to 15km daily as well as weight training — has seen her drop from a size 16 to around a size eight but she says it's not all about that, as exercise is crucial to her mental wellbeing. I get such joy from pushing my body to its limits, in a way I never dreamt was possible. That's hugely beneficial for me mentally. It was a compelling performance that showcased her impressive talent as a singer-songwriter, deft lyricist and assured performer.
And while ill health brought an end to her run, X Factor did nothing more than provide a platform for her talent. Lots of my stuff has been happy go lucky. When relationships get a little salty, there are saltier songs. The album will be out in October, with the first single in the summer.
Her humility and vulnerability also stood-out. For a while, it seemed as though she was surprised that people actually liked her music, that they cared to listen.
And any lasting thoughts on the X Factor? Not really. From a career perspective, it was beneficial but it was a strange time.
I was as seasoned as you can be at that age but nothing can prepare you for that phenomena. Dolly Parton and Kirsty MacColl always played on rotation in her mum's red Escort and combined with an obsession with the lyrical truthfulness of Notorious B.
Drawing from these artists, as well as hook-laden mainstream pop like Taylor Swift, her fresh and innovative sound led her to be the first X Factor contestant in audition history to come back on stage for an encore. Falling ill a few weeks into the competition however, Lucy decided she wouldn't return - realising that she could take her career in a different direction.
