From the Layout section on the right, click once to select any of the CSS layouts, and a preview of the layout will be displayed in the top right corner of the dialog box. Dreamweaver includes several layouts, designed with two distinct approaches to CSS. When you create a new page with one of these layouts the first thing you must do is decide which type you want to use.
Essentially you have two options: Liquid layouts , which are designed to expand and contract depending on the size of the browser window, or Fixed layouts , which are centered within the browser and have a set width. Although there are some advantages to the flexibility of liquid layouts, you will have more design control with fixed layouts.
In this example, I chose the layout called: 2 Column fixed, left sidebar, header and footer. Add to Head, creates an internal style sheet with all of the styles saved in the Head area of the file. Create New File, saves all of the styles in a new external style sheet linked to the page.
Link to Existing File, lets you add the styles to an existing external style sheet. Click Create to save the page and open it in the main workspace. If you save the styles in an external style sheet, a second box prompts you to save the style sheet separately. To add text, just click and start typing. You can also replace any of the text in the page or simply delete it. Keep in mind that there is code behind the Design view and if you delete too much, you may turn a headline into plain text by accident.
You can also add any of formatting features you want such as bold, italics, and other styles to format the text any way you want it. You can format text in these layouts as you would format any other text on a page in Dreamweaver. After you create your new page, you can and should edit the styles.
To view all of the styles in the file at once, make sure the All button is selected at the top of the CSS Styles panel. All of these layouts follow the basic rules of CSS, and both are styled correctly, they were simply created with slightly different philosophies about CSS.
By default, the Classic workspace shows the Insert bar at the top of the window below the Application bar. This toolbar contains several categories, or tabs, and is fully customizable through the Favorites tab.
The Insert bar contains buttons for creating and inserting objects such as tables and advanced elements such as div tags, frames, the Spry Menu Bar, and other Spry options. You can hide, customize, or display the Insert bar as necessary. All selections within the categories also are available through the Application bar and many of the selections also are available through the Property inspectors.
The Table button command also can be accessed through the Insert menu on the Application bar. You use the Table buttons on the Layout tab of the Insert bar to assist with page design. The following steps illustrate how to display the Insert bar if necessary and select the Layout tab.
You use the Layout tab Figure on the next page to work with tables and table features. Dreamweaver provides two modes, or ways, to use the table feature: Standard mode and Expanded Tables mode.
Standard mode uses the Table dialog box. When you create a table, the Table dialog box opens in Standard mode by default so you can set the basic structure of the table. It then is displayed as a grid and expands as you add text and images. As mentioned earlier, you use the Expanded button on the Layout tab to switch to Expanded Tables mode.
